Date of Publication:
03/25/2010

March 25, Wilmington, Del.Thomas Obermaier, CEO of RDC, the global leader in risk intelligence, will participate in a roundtable discussion on the state of Haiti’s financial system on March 25th. The Haiti Leadership Roundtable, hosted by Citi and Banque De La Republique D’Haiti, will be held at the Bankers Club in Miami. Discussions will focus on the financial system reconstruction strategy for the regions of Haiti devastated by the massive January 12th earthquake.

Mr. Obermaier will discuss the issues surrounding the Haitian financial system with roundtable panel members including representatives from The World Bank, IDB, International Monetary Fund (IMF), the U.S. Treasury, the U.S. Federal Reserve, The United Nations, the European Commission and U.S. Aid. As a member of the AML and Fraud Control Status and Best Practices panel, Mr. Obermaier will speak about AML Monitoring objectives and methods.  AML concerns will be a topic of chief concern as industry experts and public sector stakeholders look to gain insights into the rebuilding, upgrading and expanding of Haiti’s banking system.

“Times of great tragedy bring out the best and, unfortunately, the worst in humanity,” noted Mr. Obermaier. “It is imperative that during the rebuilding process in Haiti, great consideration is taken to ensure development of a solid and modern financial infrastructure – one that not only restores the faith of the Haitian people, but also addresses risk and compliance challenges going forward.”

Mr. Obermaier will highlight money laundering and frauds issues and recommend best practices for combating them as reconstruction begins. He will offer developmental strategies for countries moving up the reconstruction curve, including the importance of prioritizing AML infrastructure initiatives and improving country-wide efforts to build a culture of trust. Finally, Mr. Obermaier will suggest a handful of approaches Haiti's banks should consider in building their own programs.
